The International Banknote Society (IBNS) holds an annual competition for the best banknote design. Banknotes introduced into circulation during the year are eligible to participate.
In 2023, around 100 new banknotes were introduced worldwide. From these, the jury selected 15 finalists for the competition. The main evaluation criteria are originality of design and modern security features.
The Winning Banknote
This year, the winner was the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and its 2-dollar banknote.

This currency is used in six countries in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The vibrant banknote features Sir Viv Richards, a cricket legend from Antigua. Complementing the design are depictions of marine life, including turtles, fish, and corals.
As of May 2024, the exchange rate for the Eastern Caribbean dollar is approximately 0.74 USD and 0.69 EUR.
Other Contenders
Other leading contenders included banknotes from Peru, Jamaica, South Africa, Egypt, and the Solomon Islands.

Last year, the title was awarded to the 1000-peso banknote from the Philippines.
